How to add shelves, dividers, doors and drawers to a unit

Updated 30 October 2026

The inside of a unit is made of spaces. A shelf splits a space into one above and one below; a divider splits it into left and right. Pick a space, then say what goes in it.

Step by step

  1. Pick the space

Tap the unit to pick it, then tap the space inside it you want to change. Or open the unit's Shelves, dividers and spaces section and pick the space from the list.

  2. Add to it

Under Add to this space, add one or several shelves or dividers, doors, drawers, or studwork for a stud frame inside.

  3. Move or space them

Drag a shelf or divider on the drawing to move it, or type its position. Space all shelves evenly (and Space all dividers evenly) puts them back to even spacing.

  4. Use the menu for speed

Right-click a space, or press and hold it, for the same choices in place: Add a shelf here, Add a divider here, Put doors here, Put drawers here.

Doors

The unit's Doors and fronts section sets the doors across its whole front: none, left, right or a pair, in a slab, shaker or applied style, overlay or inset. For doors on just one part, like a cupboard under open shelves, pick that space and press Add doors. The hinges are counted by each door's height.

Drawers, two ways

  • Across the front, like a chest of drawers: the Drawers section's Across the front. They can cover the whole front, or the bottom or the top with doors over the rest.
  • In a space: pick the space and add drawers to it, such as drawers under a shelf or beside a divider.

A drawer is as deep as its runners, so each drawer's depth is one of the runner lengths you buy (Settings, Drawers). JoinerKit picks the longest that fits, or you can choose one for each drawer. Drawers behind doors stand back so their handles clear the doors. The guide to drawer runner lengths explains the sums.

Rails, backs and the rest

  • Hanging rail: a tick in the Shelves, dividers and spaces section.
  • Backs: under More options, Sides, top, bottom and back: the back pinned on, set in grooves or between the sides (for a void behind), or no back. Fit every unit's back like this copies it to the rest.
  • Leaving a side off: in the same section, for a unit that butts against another or a wall.
  • Face frames, cock bead, frontals and scribes are under More options too.

Questions

Can I have drawers at the bottom and doors above?

Yes. In the Drawers section, Across the front, set They cover to the bottom. The doors fill the rest of the front.

How do I see inside with the doors on?

Press Show in the tools row and untick Doors and drawer fronts. It only changes what you see while you're drawing: the quote still shows them.

How are the shelves numbered on the cutting list?

From the bottom up, the same as in the unit's list of spaces. You can name a space or a shelf, and the name is used instead.
