Stud wall calculator: studs, noggins and timber to buy

Type the wall's length and height, the timber's size, the stud centres and any doors, windows or recesses. It draws the frame and lists every stud, noggin and plate cut to length, with the opening framing, and the lengths of timber to buy. Free, with no sign-up.

How it works

The plates run the length of the wall, laid flat. Studs stand between them at the centres you choose, measured from the start of the wall, with one at each end. Each opening is framed with jack and king studs each side, a header on edge across the top and cripple studs above it; a window or recess also gets a sill and cripples below.

Noggins go in evenly spaced rows, one in each bay. Then every piece is cut from the lengths you can buy, longest first, with the saw cut allowed between pieces, by the same timber packer as the timber cutting calculator.

For choosing between 400 and 600 centres, and where noggins and openings go, see stud wall spacing in the UK.

Questions

How are the studs spaced?

One at each end of the wall, and one every stud centre measured from the start of the wall, centre to centre, so plasterboard edges land on a stud: 400 or 600 mm in the UK, 16 or 24 inches in America. A stud that would land in an opening's framing is left out.

How is a door or window framed?

The opening is the rough opening the door, window or recess needs. Each side gets a jack stud up to the underside of the header and a full-height king stud outside it. The header sits on edge across the top, with cripple studs above it up to the top plate. A window or recess also gets a sill laid flat, with cripples below it. A door's bottom plate is cut away.

Where do the noggins go?

In evenly spaced rows up the wall, one in each bay between studs, never across an opening. One row at mid-height is usual for a 2.4 m wall; add rows where boards join or something heavy will hang.

How long are the studs?

The wall's height less the bottom plate and the top plates, each as thick as the timber. Measure the height in a few places and use the lowest.

Is this the same as JoinerKit's stud walls?

Yes. It's the same code that lays out stud walls and media walls in JoinerKit, where you can also add a slatted face and see the wall in 3D with the rest of the room.
